The Team
Southern Photonics draws on the resources of key engineering and organizational personnel at the company, underpinned by the resources of the University of Auckland research group in laser physics and nonlinear fibre optics.
Professor John Harvey
John has been CEO of Southern Photonics since its inception in 2001. He left the University of Auckland in 2013 to enable full time involvement with Southern Photonics, although he still teaches some specialist courses within the Physics Department. He is also the commercialisation director of the newly formed Dodd Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies (www.doddwalls.ac.nz)
Dr David Hirst
David has a background in experimental laser physics and has spent 15 years working in the opto-electronics industry. He specialises in systems engineering; making disparate collections of optics, electronics, software and mechanics perform useful functions and work reliably in far-flung locations. He is also the Chief Engineer.
Dr Richard Provo
As Southern Photonics’s Development Engineer, Richard has a background in nonlinear fibre optics research, working on nonlinear four wave mixing in optical fibres. At Southern Photonics he now specializes in fibre laser systems, and the construction of protoype optoelectronic systems for related applications.
